Local Plein Air Painter

Karen Fletcher

Karen Fletcher is a local painter working in acrylic, oil and gouache. A bit of a world traveler, she was born in Hawaii, lived in the West growing up then throughout the US and Germany before settling in the Colorado Rockies.

Karen works to capture the sense of a place, the spirit and personality of an animal, the beauty of light and shadow. She spends time with sketches and small studies before painting her larger works. Karen incorporates a variety of techniques, from alla prima (painting all in one session) to layering and glazing, depending on what the subject calls for.

Karen’s choice of subjects is influenced by active pursuits in the Rocky Mountains and Utah deserts, her childhood love of horses, and growing up as a rural farm kid. Although she started out as a studio painter, Karen has embraced plein air (painting outside) painting in order to better understand and convey the true beauty and subtlety in nature.

Karen will be showing work in the Open Division of the 2023 Crested Butte Plein Air Invitational in August 2023. Although it’s down the road a piece, Karen looks forward to creating work for her August 2024 solo show at Cozens Ranch Museum in Winter Park, CO.
