Plein Air @ Altitude 2021

September 7 - September 11

Fraser Valley Arts and the Colorado Headwaters Land Trust (CHLT) are hosting a Plein Air Festival Tuesday, September 7 through Sunday, September 11, 2021.  Plein Air @ Altitude 2021 will highlight a selection of noteworthy artists painting Colorado Headwaters Land Trust easements, Rendezvous Colorado properties, as well as showcasing Grand County natural and historical attractions.

Honored Judges
We are thrilled to have Pem Dunn (https://pemdunnart.com) and Karen Vance (http://www.karenvanceart.com/) serve as our Featured Artist Judges for 2021!

Artists will begin painting Tuesday, September 7 throughout Grand County. Community events are also planned beginning Thursday Evening.

Thursday Evening (September 9) – Watch artists paint on location at our Sunset Paint-Out at the “Grand Makers Market” near Stagecoach Meadows area off of Grand County Road 5 in unincorporated Fraser.

Friday Evening (September 10) – Reception and Open House at the Winter Park/Fraser Chamber of Commerce from 5:30 pm to 7:00 pm. This is a great chance to meet the artists, see awards, and have the first chance to purchase artworks created during the week. Food, drinks (beer/wine), and music are included in your admission.  Tickets are required for this event. PURCHASE TICKETS HERE!

Saturday (September 11) from 12-5 – The following events will be taking place:

  • Art Sale: This is your opportunity to buy great artworks created during the week in Grand County and in Plein Air!
  • Quick Draw: From 12 – 2pm , artists will set up their supplies and paint or draw en plein air. Together, artists and observers share in the creative process. See the scenes and how the artists interpret them. After 2 pm, see these works exhibited on the easels on which they were created. Paintings will then be available for purchase. Everything about the “Quick Draw” is quick… do not miss out!
  • Docent Tour: Enjoy the paintings with a docent tour led by our Judge, Pem Dunn. Pem will discuss “What makes a good painting” as participants learn to spot great works of art.
  • Art Classes: Try your own hand at Painting – kids and adult art activities will be offered! These classes have been underwritten by the Grand Foundation. Check out the schedule here:

With an art card and hand written note of course!  We will learn basic techniques for drawing landscapes and painting with watercolors to create post cards the family and friends will enjoy.  No experience necessary! You will take home a mobile art kit for your own mountain or travel cardmaking. Register here!
1:00 - 3:00 PMI SPY ART (kids age 3 – 7) – no registration requiredCallie McDermottKids will go through the Plein Air exhibit and take a nature walk for drawing inspiration. Once inspired, kids will create their own masterpiece! Each participate will complete a matted piece of art to take home. They will also take home a polaroid print of their inspiration – be it a painting or something in nature!
1:00 - 3:00 PMWatercolor Weekend Warriors (kids age 8-14, no registration required)Echo ZoyiopoulosTry your hand at watercolors and Plein Air painting. Art Teacher Echo Zoyiopoulos will show you how to approach a watercolor painting en plein air.
12:00 - 2:00 PM“Quick Draw”Plein Air participants (optional)Observe artists painting en plein air in the town of Winter Park! All paintings must be completed by 2:00 pm, and then will be available for sale off artists’ easels outside the green room.

Stop by between 2:00 and 4:00 pm and join in a docent tour with Pem Dunn and Karen Vance to learn how to spot a great painting!

Proceeds from paintings sold during Plein Air @ Altitude will be split between the artists and Fraser Valley Arts and Colorado Headwaters Land Trust, both non-profit organizations.
